Reclaimed Salt-Affected Soils Can Effectively Contribute to Carbon Sequestration and Food Grain Production: Evidence from Pakistan

چکیده

Salt-affected soil reclamation provides opportunities for crop production and carbon sequestration. In arid regions such as Pakistan, limited studies have been reported involving under wheat–maize rotation, but no study has predictions on long-term sequestration in reclaimed soils the treatments used this study. Thus, a field-scale fallow period experiment was conducted rotation salt-affected Pakistan 3 years to check effectiveness of organic amendments soils, food grain production. Treatments were control (with additional reduce salinity), gypsum alone combination with different (poultry manure, green farmyard manure). The treatment manure most effective at increasing (+169% over three-year trial). maximum wheat yield also recorded year (51%), while effect combined showed significant increase maize (49%). Long-term simulations suggested that would all impact sequestration, C steady rate from 0.53% 0.86% alone, 1.25% added poultry 1.69% 2.29% manure. It is concluded crops can be produced freshly benefits climate change mitigation.

Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration in Reclaimed Minesoils

Land disturbance during mining results in loss of soil organic carbon (SOC). Reclamation of minelands can lead to recuperation and sequestration of SOC. The SOC thus accumulated, not only replenishes SOC losses but may also offset additional carbon di-oxide (CO2) emission. The assessment of the above was done on a chronosequence of reclaimed minesoils comprising pasture with topsoil application...

Management of Salt-affected Soils for Sugarcane Production

To evaluate the effect of gypsum and manure on the yield and quality of sugarcane and properties of sodic soils, an experiment was conducted on farmer’s field at Dosehra area, District Charsadda during Kharif 2004. Ten treatments comprised of control (T1), gypsum @ 25 % of the soil requirement (T2), gypsum @ 50 % (T3), gypsum @ 75 % (T4), gypsum @ 100 % (T5), farm yard manure (FYM) @ 20 tons ha...

Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Soils

Although it is common to alternate between till and no-till practices, past research has considered farmers’ tillage options to be limited to the dichotomous choice of whether or not to switch to a long-term no-till regime. This paper expands farmers’ options and models their choices of tillage frequency. Less frequent tilling sequesters more carbon but permits a greater accumulation of weeds, ...

What Can Agricultural Land Use Planning Contribute to Food Production and Food Policy?

Food Security and Food Sovereignty are two of the most important issues facing Food Policy. Maintaining productive farmland and sustainable farms as well as providing adequate volumes of foodstuffs have led to measures to protect farmland and farm activities in many countries. These include land use planning with agricultural zones and in some jurisdictions legislation to ‘protect’ agriculture ...
